New Public Housing

Historic Investment in Public Housing

The Province, with support from the federal government, has made a historic commitment to public housing with a total investment of $251 million to create 515 new units across Nova Scotia. This initiative, marking the largest investment in public housing in the past 30 years, will provide deeply affordable, rent-geared-to-income (RGI) housing for over 1,300 Nova Scotians.

In 2025, Government transferred the delivery of new public housing projects to Build Nova Scotia (BNS). BNS plays a key role in overseeing development projects that improve the quality of life for Nova Scotians, and public housing fits well under that umbrella.

Increasing accessibility in public housing

The ground level of each of the new public housing buildings will be fully accessible to meet the diverse needs of our community.
Maintaining and increasing the supply of accessible, affordable housing units is an important area of focus in Nova Scotia.

Sustainability
Prioritizing Energy Efficiency

New buildings are designed to be more energy-efficient, incorporating features such as insulation, heat pumps, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, energy-efficient lighting, and smart technologies for monitoring and controlling energy usage. We aim to create sustainable buildings that meet the needs of the present while preparing for the future.

Modular Construction
More homes, faster

We’re using modular construction because it’s efficient and faster than traditional methods. The modular homes are built year-round at an indoor plant, meaning that construction time will not be affected by poor weather. Modulars are constructed off-site while the land at the site is prepared which speeds up the overall construction timeline.
